Lady Vol’s Streak Snapped

When people think, Tennessee women’s basketball, they may think, the dominant force of the SEC. But, is that still relevant?
The Lady Vols have now dropped out of the AP Top 25 for the first time in 565 weeks. For those who don’t want to do the math, that is 31 years. The last time this happened, it was February 1985.
From 1974-1979, Pat Head, or most know her as Pat Summitt, the Lady Vols were apart of AIAW. Their first season in the SEC began in the 1979-1980 season. Under the reign of Summitt, they have won 16 SEC regular season championships, 16 SEC tournament championships, and 8 NCAA National Championships. When Summitt retired in 2012, she left with a 1098-28 (.841) record.
Holly Warlick has been the Head Coach since Summitt retired. She has added 2 SEC regular season championships and 1 SEC tournament championships.
This season, the Lady Vols are 16-11 overall, and 7-7 in the SEC with only two games left. 7 of their 11 losses came against teams that were ranked and 4 was teams in the SEC. They have also lost to Florida, Arkansas, and LSU in SEC play. They have 1 win against a Top 25 and that was against Oregon State in nonconference play.
If Tennessee loses its last 2 games against Alabama and Georgia, the will have its first ever losing SEC record. After their final two games of the regular season, they will begin the SEC tournament March 2nd.
South Carolina has won the SEC regular season but if the Lady Vols make a run at it, the tournament championship can still be won. They have not missed a NCAA tournament since the NCAA started sanctioning women’s sports in the 1981-1982 season.
