A week ago Chris Beard called UNLV “one of the most historic programs in college basketball history” and that he was “honored and humbled” to be named its head coach.
Sounds like a good gig — but apparently there was a better one out there for Beard.
On Friday, one week after being introduced as the Runnin’ Rebels head coach, Beard became the next head coach Texas Tech.
Beard was an assistant coach at Texas Tech for 10 years under Bob Knight and then Pat Knight. On Thursday, it was reported that Tubby Smith was leaving Texas Tech for Memphis.
Beard was officially hired at UNLV last week and signed a five-year, $5.75 million deal. But he met with Texas Tech officials on Thursday. UNLV will be owed a $1 million buyout since Beard left within two years of signing the contract.
Beard led Arkansas-Little Rock to the NCAA Tournament and an upset win against Purdue this season, his first as a Division I head coach.
