Bringing back a conference game for the Big 12 doesn’t guarantee a spot in the Top 4 in college football. But, what it does guarantee is around $30 million. They are adding their conference championship back in 2017.
It does help their teams get one more chance to impress the football selection committee. The other 4 of the Power 5 conferences have a championship per conference.
Oklahoma did reach the college playoffs last season without having to play in a conference championship game.
The college football playoffs rules don’t demand the conferences to have a conference championship game.
“The addition of a football championship game allows for a 13th data point for our teams under consideration for the College Football Playoff,” Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said.
In the Big 12’s six title game rematches, the regular-season winner won four times.
Now, the Big 12 will have a “true champion” like the other 4 conferences.
