With all the question surrounding the draft, including who is going number 1 overall, just got one question shorter. The Philadelphia 76ers have now informed LSU’s Ben Simmons that they are taking him number 1 overall.
They met with Simmons last week and at first thought Simmons wasn’t going to actually workout for them. But, then he did earlier today. It’s his only workout leading up to the draft.
During his only season at LSU, Simmons played in 33 games, starting 32. The game he did not start was based on academic issues. He averaged 19.2 ppg and 4.8 apg. Everyone thought he would be a candidate for the Wooden Award but he didn’t meet the academic requirement of a GPA of 2.0.
Simmons did get First-team All-SEC and SEC Freshman of the year. Also, he was awarded, Consensus first-team All-American, and USBWA National Freshman of the Year.
The 76ers finished last in the Eastern Conference with a 10-72 record. Their record was also the worst in the NBA.
The 76ers are preparing to make the franchise’s second No. 1 pick in the lottery era after they drafted Allen Iverson first overall in 1996.
He posted this picture on his instagram with the comment, “Trust the process.”
The NBA Draft begins Thursday, June 23 at 7pm on ESPN.
