3 Texas Tech vs 1 Virginia
Monday, April 8th, 9:20 p.m. ET, CBS
One word, defense. Tonight’s national championship game will feature two of the best defensive teams in college basketball.
Neither program has ever won a national championship. The winner will join Florida’s 2006 team to win it’s first title.
Texas Tech went 31-6 this season. Their defense has given up less than 60 points to four of their Tournament opponents, and gave up just 69 to Gonzaga, the nation’s best offense. The Red Raiders excel at forcing turnovers and limiting possessions.
Names to know:
Jarrett Culver 18.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg.
Matt Mooney 11.0 ppg, 3.2 rpg.
Davide Moretti 11.6 ppg.
Tariq Owens 8.9 ppg, 5.8 rpg. (Also, the team’s best shot blocker.)
Virginia has a 34-3 this season with two of those losses came to Duke. Texas Tech also suffered its first loss of the season to the Blue Devils. Last season they were on the wrong side of history but it seems that they are well beyond that loss to 16-seed UMBC. They pose a threatening defense of their own.
Names to know:
Kyle Guy 15.2 ppg, 4.6 apg.
Ty Jerome 13.3 ppg, 5.4 apg.
De’Andre Hunter 14.9 ppg, 5.0 rpg.
Mamadi Diakite 7.5 ppg, 4.3 rpg.
Who they beat to get here:
UVA: Gardner-Webb, Oklahoma, Oregon, Purdue, and Auburn.
Texas Tech: Northern Kentucky, Buffalo, Michigan, Gonzaga, and Michigan State.
This game may give us one of our lowest scoring title games in recent memory.
Prediction: Texas Tech 59, Virginia 56.
